Communities Need Midwives More Than Ever

It’s been a challenging few months to hold our calling to protect sacred spaces, to curtail fear, and to facilitate every person’s right to choose if and how they will grow their family in a safe, empowering way.
NACPM has renewed its commitment to:

  • Safeguarding the right to normal physiologic birth for every every childbearing person
  • Eliminating unconscionable disparities in birth outcomes for people of color, indigenous people, and their infants
  • Dismantling systemic racism in midwifery and the birth care system
  • Investing in a strong, racially, ethnically and socially representative CPM workforce to meet the needs of childbearing people
  • Influencing state and national policy to improve birth outcomes in all settings throughout the United States

Here in Massachusetts, there is work taking place in non-profits, within the state government, by the Massachusetts Midwives Alliance, the Mass Midwives Basic Course, MA NACPM, Bay State Birth Coalition, MassHealth, community colleges, and hospitals to advance and improve midwifery integration and equitable access to community, midwife-supported birth. It is a bright spot at a time when so much is happening that dehumanizes and threatens the well-being of our friends, family, and neighbors.
