What is a Certified Professional Midwife
Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are healthcare professionals educated and trained specifically in community birth. Our education focuses on caring for healthy pregnancies and births in homes and community settings. CPMs are nationally credentialed and, in Massachusetts, are licensed healthcare providers. Community midwives provide evidence-informed care while recognizing when additional consultation or transfer to hospital-based care is appropriate. We work collaboratively with physicians, hospitals, pediatric providers, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure families receive the care they need. Care that Grows with your Family Pregnancy doesn't happen in appointments. It happens over months of questions, milestones, excitement, uncertainty, and change. Community midwifery is designed around continuity of care. Rather than seeing different providers throughout your pregnancy, you'll build an ongoing relationship with the same midwife, who comes to know your health history, your family, and your goals for birth. Caring for two clients, together One of the things that makes community midwifery unique is that we care for both the parent and the newborn during the same episode of care. After birth, your midwife continues caring for both of you through your baby's first eight weeks of life, often in the comfort of your home. Because newborn health and parental health are deeply connected, our visits are designed around the needs of the family as a whole. We assess feeding, newborn growth, recovery, emotional wellbeing, and the transition to life with a new baby, all during the same visit. Is home birth right for you? Home birth isn't the right choice for every pregnancy. Community midwives care for healthy, low-risk pregnancies. During your prenatal care, your midwife continually evaluates whether home birth remains the safest option.
